The Gabrielle Rich Leukemia Research Foundation was brought to life after Denise and Marc Rich's second daughter died from complications of leukemia treatments at the age of twenty-seven in 1996. Gabrielle Rich was a talented young woman, with degrees in philosophy and the performing arts from Oxford and New York University. At the age of twenty-three she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease and went into remission following chemotherapy. Over the next three years she married, acted in various plays and films and was writing a screen play, when acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) was detected. In 1996, Gabrielle succumbed to the side effects of treatment. It was her wish that a leukemia foundation be created.
